Washington Guitar School was founded by long-time local guitar teacher and performer Paul Bangser, former head of guitar at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. He wanted to create a place where people could not only learn guitar but be able to play their guitar in groups with others, under experienced instructors. Adults have a bit of a guitar haven where they can learn guitar with others, play guitar in casual or more serious groups, and importantly, connect with like-minded folks who share a love of guitar and music. Kids and teens can learn solid guitar skills in a supportive class environment, with experienced teachers, and they get the chance to perform as part of our guitar ensembles.

You’ll find a strong acoustic folk-rock vibe here and a wide-ranging musical palette overall.  Rock, pop, folk, folk-rock, classic rock, and indie-rock are among the genres you might find covered here.  Our instructors are versed in a wide variety of styles – their credentials extend out to solid jazz and classical guitar backgrounds.  We love all kinds of music, and if you have a favorite type of music, we’d love to help you with it.

We also know that convenience is important to busy adults and parents.  We have two locations, one in downtown Bethesda near Wisconsin Avenue, and one in North Bethesda near NIH.  Both are conveniently located, with ample parking and waiting areas for parents during classes.  Also, our downtown Bethesda location is not far from the Bethesda Metro stop.
